This week students continued working as Entomologists on their insect research project. They are creating posters to share with others about their insect.
We have been reading Roald Dahl's Esio Trot together as a class, a story about a magic tortoise.
Students also created their own insects. All insects had six legs, eyes, antennae, a mouth, a head, thorax, and abdomen. Some had wings and stingers. Each student created a name for their insect, and told us about their diet, habitat, special features, and predators.
On Wednesday we went to Granary Road! We had a beautiful day outside learning about different insects and then playing in their "habitats". We also got to see and pet many farm animals!

We have begun our work on Small Crawling and Flying animals. Students have brainstormed what they know and wonder about insects.
This week we talked about feelings and how we manage them appropriately. Students shared their feelings on why respecting others and being responsible for our actions is important.
On Thursday we went on our Spring Walk. Students participated in a spring scavenger hunt using four of their five senses. We had snack and our recess at the park. Once back at school, we sketched and labeled what we found on our scavenger hunt.
A message from the Leadership Club:
Dear Parents,
We are asking that who ever packs your child/childrens lunches to use reusable containers and send less snacks with wrappers so that our garbage level goes down. Our leadership students have been working very hard for this to happen. Thank you for cooperating with us.
If you go GREEN, we can be CLEAN.

April 23 - 27, 2018
This week students participated in a building challenge. The only instruction given was that each group’s tower had to be created using pennies and the tallest one wins! Each group was given a ruler so that they could measure their tower height to check it against the record height. We had towers built of all shapes and sizes, but we determined that the towers with a wider bottom than the top were the steadiest and could therefore become the tallest.
Students have also begun designing blueprints for creating their own boats. They are using what they know about floating, sinking, and the results of our first test. They can use materials of their choice as long as they can bring them home.
It was Earth Day over the weekend, so we celebrated on Monday. We read The Lorax and discussed it’s message, the importance of protecting our Earth, and what we could do to help.
Students created Spring art and continued learning about poetry - this time writing Haiku poems to go with their art pieces!
On Wednesday, we went to Inglewood Bird Sanctuary! Students learned all about seeds, animals that eat seeds, and the 4 ways seeds travel (by water, air, animals, and digestive tracks). Afterwards, we got to go on a nature walk and saw many of the animals we had learned about - geese, woodpeckers, crows, magpies, ground squirrels, and evidence of beavers! The students really enjoyed the walk!
We had a fire drill this week and Room 10 students did an AMAZING job! They were silent, safe, and serious.

This week students were busy finishing up their first prototypes and receiving feedback. The first round of feedback was given by their classmates and the second round was given by Grade 3 students. The students were told what is working well and what can be improved for their prototype #2.
We finished up the Winter Olympics with a writing piece about what each student would want to go to the Olympics for.
Wednesday was Pink Shirt Day. Students were invited to wear pink in honor of Anti-Bullying. We learned the story behind Pink Shirt Day: a young boy was bullied at his school for wearing a pink "girl's" shirt, so other classmates all wore pink shirts the following day to show their support for him. February 28th every year is now Pink Shirt Day. We focused on the importance of Anti-Bullying on Wednesday.
Our science this week focused on Exploring Liquids. We talked about how liquids can be different colours, temperatures, thick or thin, moving or still, and loud or quiet. Students experimented with different kinds of liquids: dish soap, canola oil, honey, water, and corn syrup. They made predictions and then tested if cheerios and kidney beans would float or sink in each liquid. We also did an experiment to see how these liquids interact with each other (density).

This week we began our work on addition! We have started by working on our addition strategies. Students have been playing games to practice the addition strategies of doubles, making ten, and adding zero and one.
Grade one's and two's also began exploring Inuit culture. We have located Iqaluit on a map and students began researching clothing, shelter, food, and climate of the Inuit people. We have continued our learning of folktales and read some new ones this week.
We experimented with thermometers this week - discussing what celsius means and how thermometers work. We tested temperature in different rooms, and in hot water, cold water, and snow.
Students did some work around kindness this week. Our school has started a bulletin board titled "Light Up Our School With Kindness" where students are encouraged to write down an act of kindness they experienced and post it on the board. We have a lot of great posts from Room 10 up there already! Grade one and two students are excited to potentially see their names up there if they do an act of kindness for someone else!
We had a winter community walk on Thursday where students participated in a winter scavenger hunt to find things in nature they do not see in other seasons. We continued our discussions and sketching in the classroom afterwards because of the chilly weather. We are reminding students that they need to come dressed for the weather on outside field studies.
Next week students are beginning the blueprinting stage for their Design Projects. Students are going to be needing materials to build their prototypes with, so we are asking for donations of any household items you may have to contribute.
Helpful items include:
-cardboard pieces
-straws of various sizes
-popsicle sticks

Welcome back!
We had a week full of sharing stories from our break, writing and drawing our highlights, and getting back into our routine.
This week students worked on incorporating math skills into problem solving questions. Grade ones and twos were given questions that required evaluating information, organizing data, and developing solutions. Our next step is looking at a variety of strategies and choosing which is most efficient for the task at hand.
We learned what a chemical reaction is and looked at different examples of them. We followed up by conducting a science experiment that resulted in making crystals. Students made predictions, observations, and conclusions about what was occurring and why. We even made adjustments to a second round of the same experiment - by changing the shape and adding colour - and will check the results on Monday!

Next week: Students are going on our Winter Community Walk on Thursday. We have sent home forms for our Calgary Tower field study coming up in February - please return forms and money next week.
Week Eighteen
December 18 - 20, 2017
We had a very quick and busy 3 days before our break! We continued our work on the water cycle, wrote winter poetry, and learned a new math game to practice our combinations of numbers that add to ten. We also continued with our Design Thinking project - students have now decided on the 'problem' they will solve for their partner and after the break we will begin our 'ideate' phase to develop our solution plans.
In order to build our plans we are hoping to begin collecting materials. We are asking students to bring in any of the following materials they may have at home:
-cardboard pieces
-straws of various sizes
-popsicle sticks
-toothpicks and scewers
-masking tape
-plastic cups
-empty clean plastic bottles and caps
-empty clean food containers
-tin foil
-plastic wrap
-fabric pieces
Any materials would be greatly appreciated to help us create our prototypes!
The grade ones and twos were very fortunate to have a special guest come in to share his occupation. Randy Scott, a local mechanic at A-1 Transmission brought in his special tools to for students to look, touch and ask questions. Randy shared that he uses the tools to help him fix parts of the vehicle that comes into his shop and needs to be fixed. Students learned about various wrenches, how to use a measuring tape, a way to listen to any tapping or clicking noise in an engine, different types of screwdrivers and pliers, and what uniform a mechanic would need to wear in order to protect him/herself.
Have a relaxing and fun winter break! We will see the students on January 15th, 2018!

Week Seventeen
December 11 - 15, 2017
This week students completed the interview process of our Design Thinking project. They have now gotten to know their partners enough for the next step: deciding what 'problem' they want to solve for them!
We worked on our math problem solving skills. Grade One's and Two's worked on questions about giraffes and penguins at the zoo and will all be bringing home their work to show you next week.
One of the highlights of our week was when we went to visit an arcade made by the Grade 5's! Many arcade games were built with cardboard and we got to test them out and even win prizes! The students had a blast seeing what was built and many were inspired to build games during exploration time in our own classroom.
Room 10 has begun exploring the water cycle. We discovered the words evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. We learned what they each mean and how they happen. We learned a water cycle song and did an experiment where we made our own water cycle in a jar! We will continue this learning next week.
We also used our imaginations to add writing to tell a story using pictures already drawn for us, read poetry with our buddies, and built structures that hold weight and 3D shapes using plasticine.
Thank-you to everyone who was able to attend the Winter Concert. The students did an amazing job!

week sixteen
December 4 - 7, 2017
On Monday we visited the Calgary Humane Society. We got to learn how to read animals’ emotions and feelings. We learned the safe way to approach a dog and what to do if you ever come across a lost animal. We learned all the things that the Humane Society does to help animals in our community. Students also took a tour to visit the animals - we saw dogs, cats, bunnies, snakes, geckos, hamsters and finches. Students got to pet a guinea pig and a gecko!
We spent some time on computers this week. We practiced logging in, getting to the internet, and logging onto math and literacy websites.
Students also continued the interview process to get to know their partners who they will be solving a problem for.
This week we had extra music rehersals to prepare for our Christmas Concert on December 14th from 6;00 - 7:00 pm.

Week fifteen
November 27 - December 1, 2017
This week, students continued to work on asking deep questions. We discussed the importance of asking a good question during science exploration. So far, the students have decided it is very important to ask 'who?' and 'what?' so that we can gather important information. The rest of the 'W' questions are to come!
We also began exploration into hot and cold temperatures. We have begun by determining a list of things we know can be hot, cold, and some that can be both, depending on their surroundings. We have only scratched the surface of this topic.
Before our trip to the Glenbow Museum, we looked deeper into our understanding of 'community'. We talked about what we know about communities around the world, read books comparing and contrasting our community with those in other countries, and examined pictures of differing communities. While at the museum, we explored knighthood and African culture. Students participated in scavenger hunts, storytelling, writing, sketching, and examining exhibits.
Next week: we are collecting Food Bank Donations and have a field study to the Calgary Humane Society.

Grade one and two students will be visiting classrooms this week to promote the food drive. We will also be collecting food items from December 4 - 8th, next week. We are encouraging students to donate non-perishable food items, if they are able.
Week Fourteen
November 20 - 24, 2017
This week was full of math problem solving. Students were given three different math problems to solve throughout the week. The questions each involved several number sense, pattern, sequencing, counting, and addition skills. All questions had multiple ways to reach the answer, so we had a lot of great discussion surrounding how students got to their answer.
We are continuing with our Design Thinking project. Currently, students are in the process of 'interviewing' their partner so they can get to know each other better and use this information to define a 'problem' for their partner.
The students were very excited that we continued with another STEAM Friday this week!
We have our Glenbow Museum field study next Thursday!

Week Thirteen
November 13 - 17, 2017
This week students began inquiry into Boats and Buoyancy. We began with making boat art - students created all colours used in their art by mixing only the three primary colours. Students then created "I Wonder" questions surrounding Boats and Buoyancy.
We are also working on a 'Design Thinking' project, in which students will come up with a solution to a 'problem' another classmate has, design a blueprint, develop a prototype, test, and revise. Currently, we are working as a class to solve a problem within our room. We are working through the scientific process to develop a solution that works.
We are currently collecting forms and fees for our field studies to the Glenbow Museum on November 30th and The Calgary Humane Society on December 4th.
Thank-you to everyone who was able to attend Parent/Teacher Conferences this week!

We look forward to seeing everyone this Thursday and Friday for Parent/Teacher Conferences. Parent Council will be selling a variety of flavors of popcorn for $2 per bag during this time, as well.
Week twelve
November 6 - 10, 2017
We had a very busy week learning about Remembrance Day and finished it off with our assembly Friday. We were also lucky enough to have Leadership students from the Junior High next door come and teach us Poppy art.
Students continued to work with their pumpkin predictions - we discovered that pumpkins with the most ridges on the outside have the most seeds inside, regardless of size!
Math and Literacy groups continued.
Parent/Teacher Conferences are Thursday November 16th and Friday November 17th. Please go online to our school website or call the school to book an appointment.

Week Eleven
October 30 - November 3, 2017
This week, students were working on math vocabulary. We looked in depth at the word ‘equal’; what that word means and how we represent it.
We also began using our donated pumpkins (thank-you!) to make predictions about how many seeds would be in each pumpkin based on the size. The Grade 1’s and 2’s then pulled all the seeds out of each pumpkin, we cleaned and dried them, and then they counted the seeds in groups of ten to reach the final number of seeds for each pumpkin. We compared the real number of seeds to our predictions and discussed the results. Our smallest pumpkin had the most seeds!
We read two books contrasting the difference between Calgary in the past and present with the theme of prairie versus city.
Students worked on representing numbers in Math Groups and writing good sentences/paragraphs in Literacy Groups.
We have started to create a wreath of poppies for our Remembrance Day Assembly happening next week.

Halloween - OCtober 31
Students are invited to wear a Halloween costume in the afternoon, if they want to. Please only send students with costumes that they can put on themselves.
Week ten
October 23 - 27, 2017
We had a great week full of Field Studies!
On Tuesday, we walked to the Fire Station, met the firefighters, and explored their space. Students learned about fire safety and the steps to take if you are ever in a fire. Some students got to sit in the fire truck and turn the lights on. Others spent time exploring the different tools firefighters use. Unfortunately our time was cut short because the firefighters were called to an emergency!
On Thursday, we spent the day at the Calgary Zoo. Students had a very full day exploring the exhibits of plants and animals! They also spent some time observing and sketching. When we returned to the school, we discussed what animals 'wants' and 'needs' are, and how they are different from humans. The students were very excited about this trip and had a lot to share!
As usual, students worked in their Literacy groups this week on their reading and writing skills.
Home Reading started this week. Students each brought home at least one book. Students are encouraged to read picture books once with an adult, then read it to an adult, and then on their own. Students reading chapter books are asked to read a chapter each night. Each student has a plastic bag to keep the book safe and a recording log to keep track of what they read. Please initial each night they read.

Week Nine
October 17 - 20, 2017
Welcome back from Fall Break!
Thank-you for returning the Calgary Zoo forms and money. We need both returned before we leave on Thursday.
We have had a busy week! Students are working in literacy groups at their level. Some are practicing letter sounds, some are practicing letter blends, and some are working on comprehension after reading a chapter book.
The students did a lot of work with patterns this week. We have discussed all of the categories you can use to make a pattern (pictures, sounds, numbers, size, words, etc.) Students were using their pattern skills to continue on patterns that weren't complete, determine the core of the pattern, build a pattern following the pattern rule, and create their own patterns.
We have also begun to discuss the different types of helpers we have in our community. We have created a list of these helpers and what they do to assist us in our community. We have determined that so far we have met a Police Officer, we will meet Firefighters next week, and more helpers throughout the year.
Today was very exciting because we had our first STEAM Friday! For STEAM, each student was able to pick a topic that interested him/her and worked with a group of other students on that topic. We will have several STEAM Fridays in the future.
We are collecting egg cartons for a project next week - any extras would be appreciated.
Next Week: Picture Day is on Monday, our walking field study to the Fire Station is on Tuesday, and our field study to the Calgary Zoo is on Thursday.

Valley View School is having a Family BBQ on Thursday, September 14th. Families are welcome to join us at school to explore our classrooms, meet the teachers, and complete a goal setting activity with their children from 3:30 - 4:30 pm and 5:30 - 7:00 pm. The time in between can be spent enjoying food prepared by the Rotary Club!
Week Four
September 5 - 8, 2017
This week students continued with their plant observations. Some students have leaves growing from their sprouts. Some students’ beans still haven’t cracked open! We have discussed what might be causing the difference in our beans.
Students have begun to learn about mapping and why compasses are important. We have discovered that compasses work because the Earth is one giant magnet!
Our Grade 2’s were challenged to build marble mazes and use their creativity to design, test, and build a challenging marble course for a friend to try to successfully complete. Many of the designs included ramps, bridges, bumpers, and various obstacles.
One of the special things we did this week is talk about what the word ‘freedom’ means to us. We learned about Malala Yousafzai and that receiving an education is what freedom means to her. Students have created their own “What Freedom Means To Me” book that we are going to share with others in our school. We have decided that we are very lucky to live in Canada and experience freedom!
We had a fire drill this week to practice how to leave the building safely and we did a great job!
School fees are now available to be paid by going to this link: cbe.ab.ca/mycbe
Remember to check the link periodically as new fees are added at different times.

Week three
August 28 - September 1, 2017
This week students continue to make observations on the growth of their kidney bean plants. Some of the beans are growing very big! We are discussing why the plants on the windowsill are healthier than the plants that are growing in the dark.
Students have been finding answers to their "exploration questions" and they are going up on our bulletin boards. Some students are beginning to build or create an example of the answer they found. For example, some students are building a replica of a suspension bridge which is related to their topic.
This week our students have been learning about magnets through our "magnetic exploration" in which students are testing materials to find out what is magnetic and non-magnetic. They have learned that the earth is a very large magnet!
There is no school on Monday, September 4th. Enjoy your long weekend!

Week Two
August 21 - 25, 2017
This week students started a science experiment to follow the growth of a plant! We discussed what a plan needs to grow successfully. Each student planted 4 kidney beans, made predictions about what might happen, and began observations of their beans. By Friday we even had some beans sprouting!
All students have chosen an "exploration question" that they would like to answer. These are questions about anything they are wondering, projects they want to build, or subjects they are interesting in exploring. Students have just started to begin research on their topic.
This week students also began collecting data and graphing information. This involved sorting, using tally-marks, and organizing information.
